The College Degree AND Skills…

Also, I often take the time to quickly interview young people working in fast food, local grocery stores and other places.  I will survey them, by asking what high school they graduated from and if they are attending college.   One very common thread emerges after these brief question and answer sessions….their high school experiences were often outdated and not relevant to the workforce.  In particular, they were not relevant to the current technological/computer landscape.   This made me realize today that contemporary IT / Data analytic / coding training represents a high value endowment…even a privilege.  Furthermore, even the lack of career focused and/or labor market demand driven training more generally is completely absent.  This leads to confusion, isolation, and eventually desperation for income.  Times have changed…maybe changed back to what used to include real world vocational training.

If done correctly and comprehensively, vocational training could benefit not  only those seeking careers,…but also serve as a strong skills complement to those going on to useful bachelor or graduate programs.  A win-win situation.
Part II

I think that there are many lessons to learn from the Slate and Georgetown reports.  While we all know that tech, engineering and nursing do well due to the training and external demand.   What is confounding is the pay ranges for many of the other bachelor degree majors,…in particular Economics.

What I think the report leaves out is those folks who do not, straight out 4 year college, get on a corporate (or other) career track.  This was the case with us, I believe.  The outcomes for such folks, must be somewhat catastrophic and have medium to long term consequences.    Take the case of Economics below (from the Georgetown paper):
The pay range for a BA only Econ major is $48K to $120K.  I honestly have never met an Econ undergrad degree holder earning $120K.  At any rate, the $48,000 should be the floor of what I should be earning with that degree alone (not the additional IT certs that I hold).  Do you think these report results accurately portray what is going on out there in real life.   For Christs sake look at the range for undergrad Anthropology…a median of $50K !    Is Georgetown only sampling from those graduates who did everything right from early networking, to internships,. …to having uncles who hired them?  Or is this high level report from the fine Georgetown University just a load of crap?
Answer the above for me.
Part 1
I found this information on the value of various degrees and on workforce development programs that work.
The first link is the one about private/public partnerships related to workforce programs that have good results.  What I have encountered in California and Texas is workforce solutions that are highly ineffective.
I still find it very odd that from the studies on the value of an Economics degree (which are optimistic),….that this degree path/plan/area of study is NOT one of the plans considered in the workforce development programs !!!    Isn’t that a freaking amazing thing.
