Also, I often take the time to quickly interview young people working in fast food, local grocery stores and other places. I will survey them, by asking what high school they graduated from and if they are attending college. One very common thread emerges after these brief question and answer sessions….their high school experiences were often outdated and not relevant to the workforce. In particular, they were not relevant to the current technological/computer landscape. This made me realize today that contemporary IT / Data analytic / coding training represents a high value endowment…even a privilege. Furthermore, even the lack of career focused and/or labor market demand driven training more generally is completely absent. This leads to confusion, isolation, and eventually desperation for income. Times have changed…maybe changed back to what used to include real world vocational training.
I think that there are many lessons to learn from the Slate and Georgetown reports. While we all know that tech, engineering and nursing do well due to the training and external demand. What is confounding is the pay ranges for many of the other bachelor degree majors,…in particular Economics.
